Rare and exceptional natural site, the Caves of La Balme offer an unexpected discovery for the whole family in the heart of the underground world !

Come and discover our labyrinths, underground lake, stalactites and stalagmites, amphitheater of rimstone dams... during a self-guided tour (about 60 minutes).

Visited since 1807, the Caves of La Balme reveal their History and their mysteries all along a one-kilometer path.

Located in Nord-Isère (France), in the village of La Balme-les-Grottes, our caves are a great point of interest of the Balcons du Dauphiné area. 

12° to 15°C all year long !

During summer time and winter time, the Caves of La Balme are always temperate and sheltered from the rain. Then, the site can be visited all year long and in all weather.

An exceptional fauna and flora !

With a little luck and a bit of patience, you might be able to admire these astonishing mammals called bats.

23 species* of bats are staying at the Caves of La Balme on a temporary or full-time basis, on the 35 species listed in France. A great opportunity to learn more about this harmless animal with an undeserved bad reputation !

Many cave birds are also visible near the Entrance Porch of the caves as Western Jackdaw, Swift, Crag Martin, Tawny Owl... Meanwhile the underground galeries are the place of living of cave invertebrates (amphipoda called Niphargus or beetles).

Finally, take advantage of the free access of our Sensitive Natural Area called “Les Coteaux de Saint-Roch” (a Natura 2000 area). This preserved area will allow you to discover the peculiarities of the cliffs, the forest and the dry grasslands surrounding the Caves of La Balme and welcoming plenty of protected plant and animal species. The Caves of La Balme are in Nord-Isère, at 40 min from Lyon (Rhône) and at 50 min from Bourgoin-Jallieu (Isère), Villefranche-sur-Saône (Rhône) and Bourg-en-Bresse (Ain) !
